Social networks 'are new e-mail'

Status updates on sites such as Facebook, Yammer, Twitter and Friendfeed are a new form of communication, the South by SouthWest Festival has heard.

"We are all in the process of creating e-mail 2.0," David Sacks, founder of business social network Yammer said.

Tens of millions of people are using social networks to stay in touch.

The growth in such services is being heralded as the start of the real-time, pervasive web.

'New communication'

Mr Sacks said: "What people want to do on social network these days is post status updates. We think it's all people want to do."

Yammer is an enterprise social network, designed to facilitate communication within companies and organisations.

It is one of a growing number of services that lets users share micro-updates. Other services have a richer mix of content, including sharing photos and video, and allowing comments from people within your social network, building a so-called activity stream.

"I think it's a new form of communication; not quite e-mail, more lightweight and more real time, often with little bit of a publishing flavour to it," said Paul Buchheit, founder of FriendFeed, and the creator and lead developer of GMail, while at Google.

FriendFeed lets users share content from other services, such as Twitter and Flickr, and comment directly on the postings in real-time.

Simplicity and ubiquity

With more than 175 million users Facebook is the dominant platform for status updates.

Ari Steinberg, an engineering manager at the firm, told BBC News: "It's been interesting to see the way people change the way they communicate.

"You used to e-mail content to people and you had to choose who you wanted to e-mail it to and you didn't know if your friends even wanted to see it.

"Now you can passively put something out there and let people engage with it."

The simplicity and ubiquity of some of these services is beginning to see activity feeds and status updates replace many of the uses to which e-mail was once put.

Mr Sacks said: "It's no coincidence that these products are all looking like e-mail.

"These products are all standardising around a message form at the top, and the inbox which is a feed then folders around the side."

'Open system'

The problem with the current crop of status update services is that they are to varying degrees interoperable.

For example, while Twitter can be used to power a status update on Facebook the same is not true in reverse.

"We want to see a more open system where everything links together, the same as it does with e-mail," he said.

While e-mail has common protocols which allow people to send and receive messages even if they are with different services, such as Hotmail or GMail, the same is not completely true with status updates and activity feeds.

There are some standard protocols but the rapid development in the complexity and breadth of activity feeds, to include comments and ratings, has led to a series of walled gardens.

Dare Obasanjo, a program manager at Microsoft, said the firm was working on a set of standards.

"You need to give sites permission to get your data," he said.

'Hard to compete'

The complex nuances of relationships on social networks, with users having different degrees of openness with different friends or followers, further complicates the introduction of standards.

Facebook has also been accused of being unwilling to open up its system and work with other status update firms, and there is a belief among some that the social network is enacting a "land grab" in an effort to become the de-facto platform.

Mr Sacks said: "On the consumer side Facebook could become the one site for all social messaging. That becomes very hard to compete with."

But Mr Buccheit said he believed the different firms were moving towards a more federated system.

"There will be no separation between Facebook and Friendfeed and Twitter."

Mr Steinberg said: "We are totally happy to interoperate with other sites."

He told BBC News that interoperability wasn't necessary for activity streams to become a global messaging service.

"It's definitely something and a pretty cool thing we would like to enable. Conceptually it makes a lot of sense.

"It's in our interests to let people share. Twitter has had a lot of success in letting people taking their data and sharing it externally.

"We'd love to be able to let people tap into that."

Free Website Directories That Boost Your Search Rankings and Internet Traffic by Rene Smith

There are many useful ways to boost your search rankings and website traffic but not many of them have the added bonus of being free. Assuming you ignore the short amount of time submitting your site details, website directories truly are a free way to get higher placements on Google search results, increased referrals and an overall boost in the promotion of your site. Not all link directories are created equally of course so let's take a look at some of the things that separate the good from the great.

One of the first things you will do when you visit a web directory (or link directory as they are also commonly known) is navigate your way to the category that suits your website the best. If it's a quality web directory then it will contain a wide range of detailed categories set out in an easy to follow hierarchy. The best directories cater for all types of different niche websites, if you own a franchise related website then you want to add it to the franchise category rather than having to settle for a very general business category. Finding your specific niche category and submitting your URL is going to help search engines such as Google associate your site better with the keywords you have chosen.

Because owning and maintaining a website directory can be hard work and often very time consuming, some directory owners automate their submission approvals, this may save time but it is clearly a bad idea. Genuinely human edited directories fare much better because of a tougher submission criteria. If websites are accepted for the wrong categories or don't follow the submission guidelines then the directory will quickly deteriorate into a meaningless list of backlinks to sites that may or may not offer any useful content to Internet users and searchers. Spending that extra time on link approval allows users to follow benefit from having their site as part of the directory.

While a large number of web directories have good submission criteria and are easy to navigate, it doesn't mean much if they're extremely slow in their approval process. Some directories are notoriously slow at approving new URL submissions while others are run by people who have little time and end up forgetting about it all together. This can be a waste of your time as you are much better off submitting to sites that are consistently approving submissions and maintaining an active directory. Those who keep an active submission process going with fast approvals are also more likely to be keeping up with recent trends, boosting both the quality of their site and in turn the quality of the backlinks that refer web surfers back to your own website.

Assuming the directory you are submitting your site URL, title and description to has a pass mark for the previous criteria, then you're probably onto a good thing. Obviously if you are looking for free Internet marketing and promotion of your site then you don't want the directory to turn around at the last minute and ask you for a yearly subscription. There's not much more annoying then filling out all the forms and going through the whole submission process before realizing that you have to pay money. Even directories that require a reciprocal link can be frustrating as this requires extra work on your part and can lesson the impact of your original backlink.

In a nutshell you'll find that there are thousands of website directories out there but not all of them are of a high quality. Don't waste your time submitting to low quality directories or spending hard earned cash when you could be taking advantage of directories that will allow you to quickly and easily submit your details while providing you with backlinks, referrals and better search engine rankings at the same time. Market your site with directories that give you the best results and allow you to spend more time improving the quality of your own site.

The Ultimate Way to Make a Lot of Money With EBooks

There are a lot of ways to make money in the eBook publishing business. Some people like to publish title after title in a variety of different niche markets. Others prefer to publish just a handful of titles and really focus on promoting those limited number of titles. I've struck something of a hybrid approach in many of the niche markets that I'm currently operating in. Hopefully some of what I'm about to share with you will make sense and help you.

I've discovered that people seem to have an insatiable appetite for the same information. In other words, let's use the diet and nutrition niche market as an example. I've successfully published the same basic information 7 times. In each instance, I created an entirely new revenue stream. Even more remarkably, I've been ably to cross promote each of these 7 titles to buyers of one of the other titles. So for example, someone buys item #1 which is simple diet system that's safe and effective. That buyers has subsequently been exposed to item #2, which is a simple exercise system that compliments the nutritional benefits of the diet system presented in item #1. The information is largely the same, but the emphasis is different. In the first item, we focus on nutrition. That means becoming more conscious about what we eat. In the second item, the focus is on physical fitness. That means we focus on how we keep our body fit. Don't laugh, this may sound ridiculously simplistic, but I've generated tens of thousands of dollars marketing information of this nature.

So here's what I'd recommend you do. See if you can create a variety of eBooks that serve the same market. When someone buys one of your publications, cross promote one of your other publications that can enhance their experience and that helps them reach their goal. In my opinion that's the ultimate way to make a lot of money with eBooks.
